Great bit of kit Sent on 15 August 2010Bought the GPS for a long trip to a rural location near La Rochelle in France. The address was not recognised by the Garmin but it worked perfectly when I punched in the Lat Long figures from Google Earth. The Garmin decide to go off track once (into a corn field) but quickly returned to the intended route. Apart from this minor deviation, the kit worked beautifully throughout the 1300 mile trip. Highly recommended.
Clever, but could do with a couple of small tweaks Sent on 28 July 2010I've owned one of these for nearly a year now (bought in August 2009). It was my first sat nav. I chose it for no other reason than I'd used Garmin's several times whilst on business trips to the USA, and I'd never been let down by them.
Overall, the experience has been good. I've used it both on holiday and on business, always in the UK.
- It's always gotten me to my destination, regardless of how many dumb mistakes I make with my driving.
- It's easy to use
- It's easy to read / view
I do have a couple of grumbles about it though :
- If there is a chance that it can take you down the smallest / tiniest road it can find, it will. The smaller the better. The number of times it's taken me down a tiny single lane road in and around Devon is unbelievable. There are options to 'avoid motorways', but I'd like to see an option to 'avoid B roads / dirt tracks'. Even the 'fastest route' option still makes it go for the tiny off the beaten path roads.
- the ETA calculations are very optimistic and seem to assume that you will always be able to drive at the speed limit for the road that you are on. Not likely on a monday morning on the M4.
Beyond these 2 items, it's a great little unit. I've done 1 map update (a 3Gb download, very easy to do and install) in the past year.
Garmin Nuvi 255w Sent on 27 July 2010Having had a Navman for many years it was getting frustrating for it to miss roundabouts, sending me up tracks instead of roads etc etc plus they stopped making updates for it and the final straw was when it failed to recognise the satelites!!so invested in the Garmin 255w widescreen and the difference was unbelievable, very clear direction, very quick response to new routes or recalculations when required plus with the clear visual directions there were very few opportunities to go wrong, the traffic speed warnings bleeping, at first was annoying but you quickly learn that they are there for a purpose and infact warned me about one area that I was totally unaware of in terms of speed restriction, just in time to see a radar trap ahead, so now I abide by them.
Value for money I would highly recommend this to anyone
not as good as I was promised Sent on 24 July 2010I hired a TotmTom for a week and at the end decided to buy a satnav. I bought this one but it is not as useful as the TomTom was as it tends to lock and have to be re-set (5 times out of the about 10 times I've used it. )
It also doesn't find places of interest easily. You have to know the actual address. eg. I wanted to visit The Palm House in Sefton Park Liverpool (a famous visitor attraction) but it would not pick it up without the address. It is in the middle of large Sefton Park (like Hyde Park) and so that was not helpful. I could have guessed where it was in the park then zoomed in on the map and then set that as the destination. But I din't know where it was in the park which is why I was using the satnav. Very disappointing.
